Not the best pizza anywhere. Not sure why every pizza in La Crosse is served on a cracker (I know it's not really a cracker). It was freezing inside and the service was not great. They did have nice happy hour beer prices which after a few maybe this becomes the best pizza.

Great pizza, great folks. Some of the youngsters tending bar are a little lacking in energy/motivation/knowledge. This is our "go-to" place for takeout pizza or whenever we are in town with friends and family.

Great Pizza! Sauce appears, tastes and has the consistency of fresh made. The cheese and crust were equally as fresh and tasty. I travel all over the U.S. And this is a must have next time and EVERYTIME through La Crosse. Atmosphere was pretty cool as well, tunes in the background weren't blaring and the randomness had me rockin with my custom ordered delicious pie! Hell Yeah Big Al has it goin on.... Wonder if he's gotta cute single daughter....

We're out-of-towners, checking out Big Al's on a recommendation from a local. It was a good steer. Decent enough pizza, fine service even on a busy Saturday night and a nice atmosphere. The dining room is a bit loud is my only complaint. There is better pizza out there but I wouldnt know where in La Crosse. It's A-OK

La Crosse has slowly become a town of big box restaurants and retail stores, so it is refreshing to still have a family-owned business like Big Al's pizza on 3rd Street to go to for a pie and some beers. I recently took my parents out to have the Big Al, a pizza that is pretty much a Supreme, but has always been called the Big Al. It was a Saturday night, and the place was packed. It felt like they might be slightly understaffed for the crowd, but we kept our patience as a seat opened. I saw a larger group leave because the staff weren't moving fast enough for them. Tidbit for groups, call ahead. It is easy for a couple to show up and find a table, but if you have a group of 6 or more, show some patience. We sat down, waited a bit more for the server, ordered our drinks and pizza at the same time...we are smart like that...and the pizza was out about 20 minutes later. I love a place that cuts the pizza into squares, it just tastes better to me. Everything was hot, fresh, and it filled me up. Most importantly, it tastes amazing cold the next morning. Looking for a good pizza in La Crosse? Want a cold pint of New Glarus Spotted Cow, or a local La Crosse brew? Stop in here...it's a small slice of the area.

Were there on a Saturday evening and good service even though it was busy. Pizza was good--good amount of toppings and nice big chunks of veggies. Super cool ambience, not tables on top of each other either like some other places. Only negative is pizza is a little pricey--medium pizza close to $25.

Pretty decent meal to go from Al's. The salad was fresh and had nice ingredients - all for a decent price. The calzone was freshly made and full of the toppings of my choice. I would say the calzone was a little undercooked because it was very doughy in the center. Overall worth the price for a take out dinner.

Service was friendly and beer wet and tasty. Ambiance was nostalgic Americana and they do get an extra star for the 1950's convertible hanging over the entrance way. Despite the initial accolades, the proof is in the pudding. After all, you go out to pizza for the pizza. And this pizza was some of the worst I've had. We ordered the classic "Big Al" (pepperoni, green peppers, onion, etc.). The toppings were piled so high it looked like an open-faced Philly cheese steak. Yet, flavor was absent. The crust was thin, which I generally like, but tasted stale. Even with red pepper flakes, the pizza tasted like cardboard with red pepper flakes. Cheese was squeeky, copious ...and flavorless. I couldn't even appreciate the flavor of the veggies. Quite disappointing. We brought home the leftovers and shared them with a friend who, without prompting said, "This pizza's not that good." If you love quantity, Big Al's your place, because even the small was too big for two people with a large appetite. But if your taste buds have any vote, go elsewhere.

Ordered a large pepperoni and sausage pizza. 16" was $21. Thin crust with way too much sour tasting sauce. Plenty of cheese and enough toppings. Just needs a little sugar in the sauce. Delivery was about a 45 minute wait on a Monday evening around 7:00pm.

This is NOT just a pizza joint. This is THE pizza joint in the city, if not further afield. Big Al's has taken up two storefronts on 3rd street and is packed on Friday and Saturday nights. The main dining room is totally kitsch with a old town cutouts on one wall and a Cadillac on the other side of the room. But none of that really matters because you are here for the pizza. The crust is thin and crispy. The sauce is plentiful but not overpowering, and does not have a sweet taste. Toppings and cheese are well balanced and include everything from pepperoni and sausage to artichokes and spinach. Pieces are cut into squares. I have ordered in a few times and had them deliver a few times and have never been disappointed. It's my favorite place for pizza even if it is a bit pricey.

I've always had great service here. The Pizza is thin crust, cut into small squares, and really not the best ever made, but there was a time when this kind of pizza was very common in this part of the country and it hearkens back to those days.

Amazing pizza and service. Cold beer and hot pizza. Watched the Packers destroy the Vikings at Big Als

Came here for dinner after work.. apparently it's my coworkers' favorite spot. Granted it's their Monday night dinner spot, but the place wasn't busy at all. Pizza is passable, but doesn't really fit the bill as great pizza. The crust is a little stiff and resembles frozen pizza, but the sauce and cheese aren't too bad. Wings were chopped off chickens on steroids.. not really true, but they were huge. Lastly, in the land of cheese.. the fried cheese curds are apparently to die for. Not bad, but I'm not dying for them now. 3 stars for what could be a solid bar stop, but don't order the pizza and just get a few drinks and apps, then it's off to another place for dinner.

Order a local brew on tap! The pizza was really good, although our wait after ordering seemed extraordinarily long. It was delicious none-the-less. Our server was very kind, and attentive. He even brought my child animal crackers in the wait. Can't argue with that! I recommend the pineapple, jalapeño, banana pepper, green olive, & pepperoni pie. Nice work Al.

I would never go back here! This is so disappointing to me since I have always loved going there in the past. #1 SERVICE ~ My friend and I sat at the bar, I ordered a strawberry margarita and my friend ordered one of their "famous ice cream drinks." The bartender/server used almost a 1/2 gallon of ice cream, added the liquor (2 shots to 1/2 gallon of ice cream, you do the math) and proceeded to blend it. Because she didn't add enough liquid (ie. milk, or the correct proportion of booze) she ended up with 2 margarita glasses filled to overflowing. Keep in mind she only ordered one drink. On another occasion we sat at the bar again, one friend ordered a coffee which took over 20 minutes to be brought to us and my other friend ordered a tap beer that was on the other side of the restaurant which took another 20 minutes to be brought to us!!! We had to remind the server that we were still waiting for their drinks! #2 The Food ~ On yet another occasion, I ordered a cheeseburger. I figured it would be pretty hard to screw up. But I thought wrong! It was completely burned on one side, so bad that it made a thumping sound when I bounced it against my plate. TERRIBLE!! Unless you like the taste of charcoal. So, I am sad to say that I will not be going back to Big Al's.

After our first experience we wouldn't have gone back but a group we were with decided to go there, so we went. This time we ordered a Californian, I think. It was very good and I give the pizza a 4 star. Still give the place an overall 2. The pizza was very expensive....it's a pizza man... 28 bucks for a 14", medium? Anyway, the server disappeared about half way into our deal so we had to go to the kitchen and run around for 15 minutes to get a carry out box and then again for our bill.

Ordered a small pizza and the waiter warned me that it was huge, he suggested I get a personal size (which was big enough for two). The Veggie had sundried tomatoes, pesto sauce, feta, artichoke hearts, etc...It was soooo goood! I lo

We had lunch at Big Al's to celebrate my sister's graduation, and it was wonderful! $2.00 Bloody Mary special and great appetizers and sandwiches. The pizzas were delicious--thin sourdough crust and lots of toppings. Our server was super nice and helpful and the atmosphere was cool.

Not the best, but not the worst. stay away from the thick crust, it was dry and kind of looked like two medium thick crusts stacked on top of each other. Ordered regular hand tossed the second time and it was much better. I like that they offer other food for delivery and that they have actual fryers. most pizza places will put frozen fried food through the pizza oven and its not as good. Everything arrived hot and still crispy fried, tough to do, so I was impressed. Good for fourth meal, but not my first choice for pizza.

Some pretty damn good pizza, but the new owner has changed the overall recipe and now all the pizza has a layer of grease over it. Still good, but not as good as it used to be. I think they changed the type of cheese they buy, which causes the excess grease. I'm not sure. Either way, prepare to sit for about 40 minutes waiting for your pizza. This is not Dominos, they don't rush it.

At the risk of angering some and getting hate mail from others, I am going to review this pizza. This is the type of review where I wish I could have a Q&A with the previous reviewers to find out what pizzas are they eating that they compare this one to and give it such high regard. This is not a good pizza. The crust is a weird thin, bland hard crust. The sauce is bitter and the spices in the sauce were bottled and not fresh herbs. The cheese was okay, but not a true creamy mozzarella. What is frightening, is if Shelly V is correct, and this is THE pizza joint in La Crosse, then there is no hope for pizza in La Crosse.
